Accountant – Section 2(1) | Income-tax Act, 2025 vs 1961
Accountant
Means a chartered accountant as defined in section 2(1)(b) of the Chartered Accountants Act, 1949, who holds a valid certificate of practice under section 6(1) of that Act — but does not include (except for representing the assessee) a person ineligible to be appointed as auditor of a company, the assessee himself, or the person competent to verify the assessee's return.
- Replaces scattered references to 'accountant' across the 1961 Act
- Centralises the definition in Section 2 itself
- Linked to tax audit obligations, valuation reports, and various certifications
New taxpayers often wonder who can sign a tax audit report. Only a 'chartered accountant' within this definition qualifies.
